The 1992 Summer Olympics featured two tremendously poignant moments. American sprinter Gail Devers, the clear leader in the 100 meter hurdles, tripped over the last barrier. She agonizingly pulled herself to her knees and crawled the last five meters, finishing fifth—but finishing.

Even more heart-rending was the 400 meter semifinal in which British runner Derek Redmond tore a hamstring and fell to the track. He struggled to his feet and began to hobble, determined to complete the race. His father ran from the stands to help him off the track, but the athlete refused to quit. He leaned on his father, and the two limped to the finish line together, to deafening applause.

Everybody recognizes that Ludwig van Beethoven was a musical genius. But few realize the adversity he had to overcome to achieve greatness. In his twenties, Beethoven began to lose his hearing. Because he couldn’t feel the music as he once had, on one occasion he said his fingers became “thick.” His hearing problems haunted him into the middle years of his life, but he kept it a guarded secret. By the time he reached his fifties, Beethoven was completely deaf. But he refused to give up. He was once overheard shouting at the top of his voice, “I will take life by the throat!” Many of his biographers believe the only reason Beethoven remained productive for so long was this determination.

As a young man, film director Robert Flaherty spent many months in the far north looking for iron ore and gold. He found neither, but he did shoot 70,000 feet of film in his travels. Someone encouraged him to edit the film and make a documentary, which Flaherty spent weeks doing. But just as he finished, a match from his cigarette dropped among the celluloid, consuming the entire film and burning Flaherty badly. His response to the disaster was a determination to return to the far north and make a film of Eskimo life “that people will never forget.” He did just that, and the result was the classic 1922 documentary, Nanook of the North.

"Let us not become weary in doing good: for in due season we will reap, if we don't faint." St. Paul (Galatians 6:9)

Had Thomas Edison not been a man of faith, perseverance and determination, we may still be working by gaslight or at least, it may have been many years before the first electric light was seen. It has been reported that Edison failed over 6,000 times before perfecting the first electric light bulb.

On one occasion a young journalist challenged Edison saying to him, "Mr. Edison, why do you keep trying to make light by using electricity when you have failed so many times? Don't you know that gas lights are with us to stay?"

To this Edison replied, "Young man, don't you realize that I have not failed but have successfully discovered six thousand ways that won't work!"

Because Edison believed an electric light was possible, he refused to give up. He tried countless types of material in his search for a filament that would work. He sent men to China, Japan, South America, Asia, Jamaica, Ceylon and Burma to search for fibers to test in his laboratory--all to no avail.

On October 21, 1879, after thirteen months of repeated failures, Edison finally succeeded in finding a filament that would work. While experimenting the thought came to him, "Why not try a carbonized cotton fibre?"

After going through two spools of cotton, he eventually perfected a strand only to break it while trying to place it in a glass tube. He refused to give up and persevered with this idea for two more days and nights without sleep. Finally he succeeded in placing a carbonized thread into a vacuum-sealed bulb! Eureka! It worked.

Perseverance pays.

We are told that a red clover blossom contains less than one-eighth of a grain of sugar. Yet seven thousand of these grains are required to make a pound of honey. Therefore, a bee must visit 56,000 clover heads to get enough sugar for a pound of honey. But, there are about sixty flower tubes to each clover head. So the bee performs that operation 3,360,000 times to get enough sweetness for a single pound!

The truth is, most things worth doing take a great deal of determination and plain dogged persistence.

Clarence A. Barbour exclaimed, "Great things take time. Moral and spiritual changes are more difficult to be reached than material changes. It is harder to fashion a soul than it is to fashion a body. The kingdom which Christ establishes is a kingdom of free men, convinced in mind, moved in heart, definitely committed in will to the good; and that comes slowly."

So why do we often lack the persistence to keep at our spiritual tasks when difficulties interrupt our progress? Why are we shocked to discover that there are few significant spiritual goals that are instantaneously obtained." (From: Pulpit Helps, Donald N. Paulson)

It is said that a behaviour or attitude practiced continuously for thirty days results in a new life style. May we practice being committed to our Heavenly Father.

http://www.crusade.org/word/word1159.html

Hope has to do with the future. The Thessalonians endurance came from their confidence in God's provisions for eternity.

People who exercise hope do not operate on baseless optimism or wishful thinking. The idea of hope in the Bible is the idea of confidence, assurance and certainty. This person has confidence that God will keep all His promises despite every appearance to the contrary. This kind of hope produces steadfast endurance through trouble. This hope helps the believer bear up under any trial that may come his way.

Principle:

Perseverance flows from hope.

Application:

The quality of life that produces perseverance is confidence in God's plan for our lives. God's providence in the present and His prospect for our future, give Christians an edge on others.

                        http://www.crusade.org/word/word834.html

Principle:

The Christian should be stable under pressure.

Application:

The Christian does not simply accept whatever may come his way. He transcends endurance. He holds out with because of his hope.

AND FROM:  http://www.crusade.org/word/word1746.html

Application:

Some Christians give up before perseverance by faith gets a chance to go full-term in developing them. They never become all that God wants them to be.

Perseverance by faith in God's plan allows us to bear anything that may come our way so that we can make effective use of our problems. Each act of resistance results in stronger character and competence. Each victory of faith builds a stronger platform for further future success. Every act of faith we make, we either build a stronger base for maturity or we weaken that base. At any point in time, we are either fit or unfit ourselves for God's plan for our lives.

God wants us to get our PhD in Christian maturity. Many of us drop out in grade school. Those who keep on keeping on will get their SmD, their doctoral degree in spiritual maturity.

LEADER:  “Add Perseverance”  Application Continued:
                        http://www.crusade.org/word/word834.html

We do not run with "patience" but with "endurance." Endurance means stick-to-itiveness. Tenacity enables us to say, "I will not quit. It is too soon to quit." This Christian does not throw in the towel.

One of the first things we want to do when someone criticizes us is to quit. Who wants to be known as a quitter? We need to develop the attitude that, "This too shall pass. God will give me the endurance to hang in there." Running from the problem is no solution because you will run into the same problem wherever you go. You are still the same person there as well. You take yourself with you. It will not profit you to run from the problem.
