LEADER READ:  “Positive Thinking”  EXCERPT

Pastor Ron ron@pastornet.net.au

http://www.sermonillustrator.org/illustrator/sermon2c/positive_thinking.htm

I read of an old man of eighty-seven who was killed in an accident. The autopsy revealed that he had been suffering from several diseases, any one of which could have killed him many years previously. His widow was asked the secret of his long life. She replied simply: ‘I don’t really know; except that, every night before he went to sleep, he said, “I’ll be better tomorrow”. That man displayed a positive attitude to life. A lady here in my home state of Tasmania who died earlier this year at the age of 94 left a substantial portion of her estate to a local charity. She had suffered from a debilitating disease and dementia for many years yet always made light of her difficulties. Her favorite remark was “maybe I’ll improve with age.”

These two examples point to the fact that positive thinking can have a marked effect on our lives. Of all the Apostles, Paul experienced hardships that would have deterred a lesser man. Yet in his witness to others and in his own life he displayed a positive attitude. He urged the church at Corinth not to receive God’s grace in vain for this was the time of God’s favor and of salvation. His letters to the Ephesians, Colossians, Philippians and Philemon, all written in captivity, are examples of profound and positive teaching at a time of great personal adversity. David went through a difficult period when King Saul, jealous of David’s popularity, made several attempts to kill him. Yet David remained positive and refused to harm the king, relying on God to save him from all his enemies. Psalm 18 is David’s wonderful song of praise and thanksgiving that concludes in verse 50 with one of the most positive statements in the Bible.
 Psalm 18:50

He gives great deliverance to His king,

And shows lovingkindness to His anointed,
To David and his descendants forever.

12Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.
14Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe 16as you hold out[1] the word of life--in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing. 17But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

In the days before self-operating elevators, there was a lady who was an elevator operator in a large university in Japan. She could think of no more monotonous work than operating an elevator all day long. She was miserable and grumbled every time someone spoke to her.

One day it occurred to her that she could influence young students to a brighter way of seeing life. But to do that she will have to change her own attitude towards life!

The next day she started with a smile on her face. It was extremely difficult for her, but by sheer will power she was determined to cheer up whoever rode in her elevator.

As the years went by, people sought her advice more and more. Many were helped by her bright attitude and her optimistic view of life. She became a "Solver of Problems!".

When she finally died, a few thousand people attended her funeral. She gained her fame because she changed her attitude about life and desired the bright side to life for her and for those with whom she came in contact.

The Bible encourages us to change our mental and spiritual attitude because it dictates our lifestyle.

The winner glories in the good; the whiner majors in the mediocre. Winners’ thinking processes differ from other people’s. As part of their normal, moment-to-moment stream of consciousness, winners think constantly in terms of I can and I will. Losers concentrate their waking thoughts on…what they should have done … would have done … what they can’t do. When the mind’s self-talk is positive, performance is more likely to be successful.

The huge majority of our negative doubts and fears are imaginary or beyond our control.

Both the hummingbird and the vulture fly over our nation's deserts. All vultures see is rotting meat, because that is what they look for. They thrive on that diet. But hummingbirds ignore the smelly flesh of dead animals. Instead, they look for the colorful blossoms of desert plants. The vultures live on what was. They live on the past. They fill themselves with what is dead and gone. But hummingbirds live on what is. They seek new life. They fill themselves with freshness and life. Each bird finds what it is looking for. We all do.

 “Transformation in an Elevator”

Winners and Losers”  By Denis Waitley (success)

The winner glories in the good; the whiner majors in the mediocre. Winners’ thinking processes differ from other people’s. As part of their normal, moment-to-moment stream of consciousness, winners think constantly in terms of I can and I will. Losers concentrate their waking thoughts on…what they should have done … would have done … what they can’t do. When the mind’s self-talk is positive, performance is more likely to be successful.

The huge majority of our negative doubts and fears are imaginary or beyond our control.

“Think You Can”

Plaque on the wall of Golfer Arnold Palmer’s office

If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don’t.
If you’d like to win but think you can’t,
It’s almost certain you won’t.

Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But sooner or later, the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.

QUOTE #37

Both the hummingbird and the vulture fly over our nation's deserts. All vultures see is rotting meat, because that is what they look for. They thrive on that diet. But hummingbirds ignore the smelly flesh of dead animals. Instead, they look for the colorful blossoms of desert plants. The vultures live on what was. They live on the past. They fill themselves with what is dead and gone. But hummingbirds live on what is. They seek new life. They fill themselves with freshness and life. Each bird finds what it is looking for. We all do.
